A Simulation Environment for TRAVLER

Authors: Rajive Bagrodia, Yu-an Chen, Vikas Jha, Richard Meyer, Joel Short, and An-I Wang

This poster describes a simulation testbed being developed under the ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) funded TRAVLER project. The goal of the TRAVLER project is to contribute critical technologies to develop a transparent virtual networking environment for mobile computing. TRAVLER system architecture consists of several layers: Application layer (e.g. WWW) being the top-most, and communication substrate (radio/wired/dialup) being the bottom-most. When complete, the TRAVLER simulation testbed would include (a) standard APIs for each layer to support plug 'n play prototyping and performance evaluation of simulation or operational components belonging to any layer (e.g. radios, networks, file systems, OS etc.), (b) a library of simulation models, at different levels of detail, for components in each layer, (c) easy-to-use textual and visual simulation languages to allow users to write new simulation models, (d) an ability to execute the simulation on parallel computers for greater speed, and (e) an ability to use operational components in simulation systems ( for more accurate/faster hybrid simulation), and simulation components in operational systems (for on-line simulation to improve the peformance of operational system components).
