The weakness of the conditional event protocol is that it cannot use the communication topology like the null message protocol, and hence requires the participation of all LPs. Since both protocols have different weaknesses, it is beneficial to execute both in the same simulation, and have an LP calculate its EIT as the maximum of the EIT estimates provided by each protocol. In the MPI simulation model presented in the next chapter, we use this combined protocol as the underlying simulation protocol.
